A panel of first-tier carriers has debated the future of bandwidth at PTC in Hawaii, with players predicting a new era of economic rationality despite a rash of new cable builds and capacity upgrades. The panel was opened by PacNet CEO Bill Barney, who said if current consumption rates continue, international capacity may be full in less than five years.

Newcomers such as Google and Skype have the potential to destroy existing business models for international wholesale services, according to iBasis CEO and president Ofer Gneezy.

Australia-Japan Cable has refuted the view that bandwidth to Australia is too expensive and says it is upgrading its capacity three-fold as a response to overwhelming demand for multi-gigabit interfaces.

Challenges presented by Web 2.0 technologies and the growing number of teleworkers are forcing enterprise and managed service providers to work cooperatively, according to a panel at PTC. The five-man panel discussed evolving strategies in the enterprise space, with social networking technologies creating new issues for providers.

Tata Group’s telecommunications brands TGN, VSNL and Teleglobe are entering the 30 day countdown for a complete image overhaul as Tata Communications.

Bharti Airtel announced the launch of the India with Airtel strategic partnership program at PTC 08 in Honolulu.
